!WHAT ARE FABS ?
A Fab is a zip file that contains the needed files that allow a user/Fabber to fabricate a CNC project on a robotic tool (CNC ROUTER MILL LATHE etc)and can contain, but are not limited to, DXF files, EPS files, PDF instructions, plans, drawings, documents, gcode and video or audio files.

In the professional world of manufacturing robotic tools are called CNC machines. CNC stands for computer numeric control and has been around in one form or another for many years. These CNC machines or robotic tools
are used to make nearly all of the parts and products we use every day from cars to lawnmowers, to the electronincs in the monitor you are reading this information on.

Until recently, these Robotic tools have only been used in industry as they were very expensive costing tens of thousands of dollars. But with the advent of the personal computer, CNC machines or robotic tools, as we will call them from here on out, have been getting more and more inexpensive dropping below the one thousand dollar mark for an entry level machine in the past two years giving rise to a rapidly expanding base of hobbyists and semi pro users that have been buying and constructing robotic tools of all shapes and sizes in workshops, basements and garages all over the world. One of the most common of these is the robotic router. This robotic tool can cut out precise parts from many types of material to make all sorts of products and needful things. There are many other robotic tools to shape, cut and even 3d print all types of material including steel, aluminium, wood, brass, cardboard, plastic, vinyl and even cloth. "You know, even your desktop printer is a robotic tool that is used to print images and text on paper."But the types of robotic tool we are concerned with here are the ones that cut, print and shape materials into real things that we can admire and use in our every day lives.
With the advent of personal robotic tools coming into being over the past several years, the term for a person that uses a robotic tool to make things has developed into a new word in the language and that word is Fabber. A Fabber uses a computer with some special software to design things along with robotic tools to fabricate those designs into real things from simple artwork to sophistcated products with hundreds of parts.
Now with the development of the internet and, more recently online social networking, these designs and the more complex multipart projects (FABS) can be shared, bought and sold by Fabbers and designers from all around the world using the newly developed Fabscity website.
These product designs and related files are what we call FABS and thats what Fabscity was made for. This portal is for Fabbers artists and designers to publish FABS for sale to each other and to you and me the public at large. Makecnc.com is a place where designers artisits and Fabbers can support thier products and where they can collaberate on projects and generally network with others of common interest.
An important thing to remember is that FABS can do many things, not just drive large robitic tools but also small ones like the CraftRobo, a small, inexpensive desk top robotic cutting tool that can cut out stickers and designs for card models and general home craft projects.
"But I am not a fabber. What use are fabs to me?"

The answer is simple and really cool. As you have heard Fabbers are everywhere in most towns and cities worldwide and this number is exploding as you are reading this information. These Fabbers can register to Fabscity, so you as a member of the community can purchase a Fab from our store and take it on a flash drive or CD to your local Fabber to have them cut the parts for you to assemble and make the project yourself or even have them fully fabricate your Fab into the product. you can even email them the FAB as long as they delete it after they have cut your parts FABS are products and as such are subject to copyright and FABSCITY will enforce the intterlectual property rights of ist designers and artists.
So Fabbing is open to everyone and everyone can use and make fabs.
A recent example of Fabs in action is our Makebot Router FAB. At first we made this cool and very useful little machine as a kit that weighed around 60 pounds and had several hundred parts. We sold these kits around the USA and they cost about $550 and $65 dollars to ship to most places in the USA but here's is where FABS changed everything. We had many inquiries from all over the world from people wanting to buy our kit, but due to huge shipping costs and problems with customs and damages, the list goes on, it was not cost effective to ship outside the USA. So we decided to turn the kit which was actually made on a robotic router tool into a FAB that could be downloaded through Fabscity.com in another country, say South Africa, and reproduced by a local Fabber using locally available materials at a cost far less that even the original kit was selling for in the USA. Isn't that Amazing!

This is just one example of Fabs in action.
This powerful new way of custom personal manufacturing is about to change the world in ways we never thought possible only a few years ago.The future looks exiting with the prospect of bringing manufacturing back to a community level. Even now NASA is planning on using FABs to fabricate spare parts using robotic tools in flight on the manned missions to mars.To become a FAB designer all you need is a computer and some free software programs and you have the tools to make money online right from your home.If you are already a Fabber you can register with Fabcity and Makecnc.com to provide Fabbing services in your community anywhere in the world. For a more in depth understanding on particular types of Fabbing go to www.fabscity.com and click on learning. To hear how you can become a Fabber or designer and make money online, please click on FabsTo Gold for a whole series of videos and information.
Happy Fabbing!
